Highlighting my hair blonde, dark brown, dark auburn?

I have an appointment with my hairdresser next month but I'm a little worried about doing something different. I liked the way Kelly Clarksons hair looked on the front of her CD- so I have decided to do this too. I have dishwater blonde hair and I want blonde, dark brown, dark auburn- almost purple- if you can picture that... do you think this is a good idea? Thanks!
