Hi, I naturally have light brown hair that I have previously dyed a darker brown. I tried a self highlighting kit once which sent it bright red!! I then put it back to a normal brown. The thing is my hair still seems to have these red tones in and whenever i try and put a blonde dye on it goes orange/ginger. I hadnt coloured my hair in ages and so today I used a golden blonde dye, its OK but its a bit ginger. What I really want to achieve is a lighter blonde and want to know how to do this. Can I just apply a lighter shade again and go from there or wont it work like that? I was thinking that if i put a platinum blonde colour on then it should get to a nicer colour. any help would be much appreciated. P.s my hair is in really good condition and dont want to use a pre-lightener. (i did do a strand test with a pre-lightener but it didnt go the yellowey colour it was supposed to)

go to the local beauty supply store and ask for a toner to tune the reds down in your hair. or u can go to a pro to get it done. most places are under $100.00 and most are able to achieve the desired color

Go to a salon and have it professionally done........you are going to ruin your hair with at home products and chances are you will have to keep processing it over and over to achieve the color you want and it will eventually fry your hair.

I am sorry but the only way to make your hair blond is to bleach it, and if you do that you will ruin your hair, but you can give yourself blond higlights, with no problem.

I know you don't want to hear "go to the salon" because that's insanely expensive. So that's what I DIDN'T do!
All I did was use a bleaching kit. Yes, my hair was a terrible shade of orange, but I just had to do it again. After I bleached the brown out, I used a natural shade of blonde and it looked just great! Both bleaching kits cost about $9:99 (I used Garnier) and then I used a cheap box of L'Oreal Colorsilk (Less than $5)
So, for $25, your hair can look fantastic. Just make sure to CONDITION your hair like crazy because the bleach will totally suck the life out of it if you don't!

You are doing way too much self-coloring. Do yourself a favor and go to a professional. They will have to do a color correction on your hair because you have put so many different colors on it. You will be much happier with the results if you have it done professionally. Trust me, I have seen some pretty messed up "do-it-yourself" hair. Plus, the products that the pros use are much gentler on your hair. Like I said, do yourself a favor, you are worth it!

I'm a Cosmetologists and have defiantly been through what you are going through. It is almost impossible to go from dark to light without using a bleach/pre lightner unless you want to ruin your hair by dying it time after time to get your desired color. Alot of people are afraid of bleach, but if used correctly, it is just as good as dyeing it. Yes, bleach is harsher on your hair, but what is worse-dyeing your hair several times and maybe getting your desired result or simply bleaching it and getting your desired result? There are 10 levels of hair color shades from light to dark. Depending on the level of your hair now, depends on what you need to use. If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply near you, go there and tell them what all you have done and what you want to achieve, they should be more than happy to help you free of charge. They have several sample shades of hair color, conditioners, additives and so on.
